18-Year-Old You Isn’t In Charge Anymore

Inside: Your life has changed, so your career goals can change too. Simple as that!

If you wouldn’t want the 18-year-old version of you to choose your jeans for the rest of your life, don’t let her choose your career for the rest of your life.

Here’s what I would be doing if 18-year-old me still got to make all the choices for my life:

Jeans – Low Rise

Eyeliner – Aggressive

Shoes – Chunky

Underwear – Uncomfortable

Entertainment – Savage Garden on my Discman

Partner – Oh no…

LOTS to be concerned about here.

But here’s the thing, I don’t let 18-year-old me make the choices anymore because I am not 18! My life has changed, my interests have changed, my needs have changed, my denim preferences have changed.

And so I let present-day me make the choices and that includes decisions about my career.

18-year-old me would be shocked that I don’t currently work in sports marketing and I’m not in the most technical sense “using my college major.”

That’s okay though! She can be shocked all she wants because she doesn’t exist anymore.

The girl I was has evolved and changed, and honestly, I hope she would be a little mad if she showed up here to find out that adult me was letting teenage me still run the show.

So you picked a major in college – cool. That doesn’t mean you need to do THAT forever.

So you chose a career path after graduation – great. You didn’t sign a blood oath to it.

You can and maybe SHOULD make a change in your career now because your life has changed.

The objection to all this? Making a change isn’t easy.

Fine. You’re right – it may not be easy.

But labor wasn’t easy. Doing your own taxes wasn’t easy. Getting your kids to put on their shoes isn’t easy.

You did it though, and you’re doing it. Give yourself a little credit, you can do hard things.

And this hard thing is worth it. For 18-year-old, and 25-year-old, and 37-year-old, and 44-year-old wonderful you.

Plus, I for one, can’t wait to see what present-day YOU chooses to do next.
