A 3-Step Career Reset for 2026 (Made for Moms)

Inside: A practical plan for giving your career a reset in 2026.

If you’re a parent coming out of the holiday season feeling foggy, you’re not alone!

The last few weeks of the year tend to blur together. School spirit days, baking cookies, buying gifts, sending cards, and making magic for everyone else! Somewhere in there, it’s easy to lose track of what day it is, let alone what you should be doing for your career.

We’re heading into the new year now, though, and this is the moment for a reset. Not a dramatic reinvention or a list of resolutions that will disappear by mid-January, but a simple, grounding reset that meets you where you are.

This 3-step career reset is designed to help you enter 2026 with clarity, confidence, and momentum without adding pressure or requiring more energy than you have to give.

Step 1: Reclaim Your Wins

Before thinking about goals, changes, or next steps, it’s important to pause and acknowledge what you already did this year.

When people feel stuck in their careers, it’s rarely because they lack ability; it’s because their confidence is drained. And let me tell you, most moms underestimate themselves. However, when they take the time to reflect on what they’ve actually accomplished, something shifts.

Think back over the past year and identify three wins. Big wins, small wins, and everything in between.

Your wins might include:

  • Advocating for flexibility at work
  • Learning a new tool or skill
  • Supporting a teammate during a hard season
  • Keeping a promise to yourself
  • Navigating a challenging period at work or at home

Every one of these counts. They are proof of resilience, capability, and growth!

Reclaiming your wins reminds you that you are not starting from scratch. You’re building on the momentum you already have.

Step 2: Choose a Guiding Word

Instead of setting resolutions that create pressure, choose a single word to guide your career decisions in the year ahead.

A guiding word works because it simplifies everything. It becomes a filter for opportunities and a compass for decision-making. When choices feel overwhelming, you can return to this word and ask whether something supports or detracts from it.

Some examples that I’ve heard from clients and that might resonate with you as a mom include:

  • Steady
  • Joyful
  • Bold
  • Enough
  • Aligned

The goal isn’t perfection or reinvention. Its direction!

Choose a word or feeling that reflects what you want more of in your career next year. Write it down somewhere you’ll see it. You’ll use it as an anchor throughout the year.

Step 3: Take One Tiny January Action

Real change doesn’t start with an overhaul; it starts with one small, intentional step.

Rather than trying to transform your career all at once, choose a single, manageable action to take in January. Something small enough to feel doable, even in the middle of busy family life.

A tiny action might look like:

  • Scheduling one coffee chat with someone whose career path interests you
  • Updating one section of your resume
  • Spending 15 uninterrupted minutes writing down what you want (at least clearly articulating what’s NOT working)
  • Asking your manager one question about how you could have more flexibility in your job
  • Blocking one hour on your calendar for career reflection
  • Sharing your goal with an accountability partner
  • Deciding to work with a coach!

Remember, the objective isn’t a complete career transformation in January. It’s a 5% improvement. Small, consistent progress is what leads to lasting change.

2026 is Your Time for a Career Reset

Let’s recap! Your 3-step career reset is:

  1. Reclaim your wins
  2. Choose a guiding word
  3. Take one tiny January action

As you move into 2026, remember that clarity doesn’t come from simply doing more. It comes from being intentional! You’re allowed to move slowly, thoughtfully, and in a way that supports the life you’re building.

If you want to share your guiding word or your January action, I’d love to hear it. Come find me on LinkedIn or set up a coaching consultation call. You’re not alone here! I’ll be cheering you on every step of the way.
