Elder Millennials and Gen Xers – It’s Your Halftime to Shine
Inside: Reminiscing on the halftime show, and looking ahead to the second half of your career.
Gather round, Elder Millennials and Gen Xers. Gather round the big rectangle in your home and be transported back to the days of yore.
Or the days of your body moving in a WHOLE different way In Da Club.
(Oh my goodness, 50 was there too! And upside down!)
I know I’m not going to be the only one talking about the Superbowl halftime show this year, because come on…stop it…that was amazing.
But maybe I’ll be the only one to make you reflect on halftime in a different way.
Too Old to Do Something New? Nope!
The average age of those fantastic halftime performers? 49.
Mary J. Blige – 51
Dr. Dre – 56
Eminem – 49
50 Cent – 56
Snoop Dogg – 50
Kendrick Lamar – 34
That matters, and not just because it left us all sitting on our couches very concerned about how 50 Cent was going to get down from there…
It matters because every day I hear from people in their 30s and 40s saying maybe it’s too late for them to make a change in their careers. That at this point they aren’t really going to shine. Maybe they should settle in and ride it out.
Is it scary? Oh yes. It’s terrifying.
Before I start shouting “NOOOOO” at those people, I listen and see where that feeling is coming from. Usually, it’s fear.
❌ Fear that putting themselves out there would make people not like them.
❌ Fear of asking for too much.
❌ Fear of taking a risk.
Some of those fears are real, some are in our heads, and some are projected out onto a world that is actually cheering for you. And they are cheering really hard!
It’s Your Halftime Show Now
So here’s my challenge for you this week.
Think about how you might be letting fear hold you back and do one small thing that pushes you to move through the fear.
Here are some suggestions.
✅ Say yes when you normally would say no.
✅ Send that email sitting in your draft folder.
✅ Brush up your resume.
✅ Ask someone for their advice.
✅ Advocate for yourself.
I ask you to do this for you. But also because someone out there is waiting for YOUR halftime. Just like we needed Dre, Snoop, Mary, 50, and Slim Shady – they need YOU.
So what do you say? Let’s give them a show!
