Picture this: It’s Monday morning. You’re hustling the kids off to school with library books, sneakers for gym class, show and tell items, and water bottles packed up.

THEN, you run back into the house to grab everything YOU need for the work day, hop in the car, and drive yourself to a job that you simply don’t like anymore. It’s not fulfilling, the hours aren’t flexible, and it doesn’t fit your life.

Your current job, much like your life, is BUSY, so you don’t have a lot of time during the day to look for a different job. And after the kids are home, practices are attended, homework is finished, and bedtime is tackled? Forget about it! You have minimal time to make this happen.

So what’s the solution? How can you launch a fast job search, that’s also effective in helping you live a life that is more aligned with what you actually want and need as a parent and professional?

You start by avoiding these 4 key job search mistakes.

The Resume Jump

Mistake #1: To get your job search moving, you race to start updating your resume, and then spend hours editing it over and over again.

Here’s why this doesn’t work. As we’ll talk about next, the resume is just one piece of the puzzle when it comes to your job search so it should not be taking up all of your job search time if you want to have a fast job search.

Also, your resume is a marketing document that sells you to an audience of hiring managers. If you aren’t clear on WHO you are marketing yourself to and for what (industry, function, specific role, size of company, company pain points) then you’ll be creating a resume that is much too vague.

Vague resumes get tossed in the virtual recycling bin. Specific targeted resumes that you create AFTER getting super clear on what you want and need open doors.

The Unfocused Overapply

Mistake #2: You believe the more jobs you apply for, the better chance you have of landing a new role.

Lots of people start playing the numbers game when they are trying to find a new job. But the trouble is, a “quick look on LinkedIn” to find more jobs to apply for can turn into a 3-hour scroll session after you put the kids to bed. Not efficient!

Then every job application takes 30 to 90 minutes of your time and that adds up quickly.

The real kicker here though is that 80% of new jobs are actually found through networking and referrals. Yes – 80%!

So while you’re using all of your job search time to apply to a ton of jobs that maybe aren’t even the right fit, you are also tanking your confidence because you aren’t hearing back from cold applications.

Instead, you could be using your job search time more efficiently using a networking-based strategy proven to increase your odds, and ensure that you’re applying to jobs you actually want!

The Back to School

Mistake #3: You assume it’s too late to change careers without returning to school so you think you need to stay on your current path.

Let’s say you made a choice of what to study or do for a job at age 18. Your life has changed a lot since then. Kids, interests, needs. It’s a whole new ball game! And you’ve gained a ton of valuable experience since then.

Plus, not only have you changed, the job market has changed too! New companies, and even whole new industries have popped up left and right and those new companies and new industries need people with transferable skills and experience to help them thrive.

Like teachers using their expertise to work in Ed Tech. Hobby gardeners using their Project Management experience and interest in nature to head up school gardening programs. Industry experts becoming consultants.

You don’t need to go back to school in this busy time of your life. There is so much opportunity for you to use what you’ve learned ALREADY to make an impact.

Remember, you are not starting from scratch, you’re starting from experience in an exciting, evolving job market that needs what you have to offer!

The “I’ll Do It Myself”

Mistake #4: You think that no one else is struggling with this like you are, so you need to figure it out all on your own.

If you were to take a poll the next time you’re with your kids at the playground, you would find that you are not alone in wanting to make a change in your career as a busy parent. Not. At. All.

While there were many contributing factors to the Great Resignation of 2021 – 2022, one factor was job satisfaction. For example, only 7% of workers in the US say they are in their dream career. And 65% of Millennials report being not fully satisfied in their jobs. Lots of room for improvement there!

So if there are so many people looking to make a change, that means there is COMMUNITY out there to support you and help you speed up your search. Plus, there are trained professionals in the field of career development who can teach you the tools and skills to make progress FAST as you seek out a new fulfilling and flexible job that fits your life.

Tap into resources and community and you can go from “I’ll just do it myself” to “I DID it myself because I got the support I needed.”

You don’t need to do this alone!
