8 Reasons to Watch The New Season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
Stop whatever you are doing and go watch the new season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel on Amazon.
Or read this blog post first, be convinced that this is the best thing currently on television, and then go watch all of it.
Alright fine… feed your kids first, take a shower, go to work, donate to charity, avoid looking in the mousetrap in your garage because that problem will probably just take care of itself, and then go watch the new season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
The Marvelous Premise
Before you go watch the new season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, we should start from the beginning.
Midge Maisel is a wife and mother living in New York City in the 1950s. She’s beautiful, smart, witty and totally supportive of her darling husband’s foray into stand up comedy. Until he turns out to be THE WORST when he bombs on stage, blames her, and leaves her for his secretary.
But when life threw Midge this curveball she knocks it clear out of the park. Well sort of. Eventually. She gets real drunk and accidentally performs stand up comedy and gives the audience the gift of her absolute hilarity. Cue chapter 2 of her life.
There are WAY more than 8 reasons to watch Seasons 1 through 3, but we’ll start there.
1. Amazon Prime Ain’t Just for Diaper Delivery
You probably already have Amazon Prime (or you’re a grown adult woman who has latched on like an infant to your mom’s account) but may not be taking full advantage of Amazon Video.
There are so many shows and movies included on Prime streaming right into the comfort of your living room. Netflix, but Amazony. And the Amazony version includes The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
2. Rachel Brosnahan Slays All Day
Rachel Brosnahan as Midge Maisel is EVERYTHING. She’s perfection.
With incredible comedic timing, she has me desperately wanting to go to a Mrs. Maisel comedy show and then I immediately get real sad when I realize once more that this is just a TV show.
I don’t want to give away anything, but when things get real Rachel also has the acting chops to make sure Midge is anything but one dimensional.
3. 50s Fashion For the Win
What I wouldn’t give to wear any of Midge’s outfits.
In theory.
They are probably really heavy and scratchy and girdlely in real life. I also REALLY like the 2017/2018 “athleisure” trend we’re riding right now… But dang, she looks fabulous.
I’m not sure how she chases her children in those outfits, but actually they never show her chasing her children. Just measuring their heads and leaving them alone in parks. #NoJudgement
4. Who Run the World? Girls.
Women in the entertainment industry have been crushing it for a LONG time, and have dealt with a lot of garbage along the way. So, a freaking fantastic show that is dominated by talented women on screen and behind the scenes is exactly what we need right now.
Shout out to Amy Sherman-Palladino – the show’s creator and co-executive producer. Lady, this show is amazing, and the Hollywood Foreign Press agrees.
Also, Marin Hinkle’s spot-on portrayal of Midge’s Mom and Alex Borstein’s hilariously dry Susie – stop it. They are so perfect.
5. The Boys are Back in Town
Remember Monk? He’s Midge’s dad and he’s awesome in this. Sometimes you think he’s being terrible, sometimes you think he’s great, always you think Tony Shalhoub is acting the snot out of this role.
And Mr. Joel Maisel… well he’s a complicated sort. I want to never ever forgive him for being a jerk, but at the same time maybe I will? Michael Zegen does a killer job portraying sad, sad puppy Joel leaving me quasi maybe a little hopeful for a redemption arc.
6. Roommate Approved
My husband likes The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. And Glen has exceptional taste in comedy.
As in he sometimes laughs at my jokes.
7. How the Marvelous Sausage is Made
I really don’t want to see how the sausage is made, but I do like seeing behind the scenes of other things that I enjoy.
I love stand up comedy. From the dive bar where you can bring your take-out Chinese food to the biggest of city stages, the amateurs to the professionals, I love it all.
So, I am obsessed with the fact that Mrs. Maisel shows you the evolution of a stand-up comedian creating her act. It’s so much more than having a naturally quick wit, and I love seeing the research, note-taking, and A B testing that goes into the never totally finished product.
8. Comedy with Heart
This show is definitely a comedy. But it’s not 100% a comedy. There are some deep moments that pull at your heartstrings. I could tell you that I cried. But also regularly cry while watching the Bachelor/ reading Tweets/ and folding laundry. So that’s not particularly helpful information.
But believe me when I say this show has some meat to it. It’s like This Is Us had a baby with Parks & Rec. That was a weird thing to say. And probably not really accurate. But it’s a combination of drama and comedy that I absolutely adore.
It’s a dramedy? Comeda? Should have stopped at dramedy?

Ok, I need to get on this. As much for the fact that we’re already paying for it and not using it as for your powers of persuasion. 🙂
Both excellent reasons! 😉
I’ll have to check this out for sure! I love 50’s fashion, I’m glad you brought that up. It’s always super cool to go back in time! I also love a great comedy!
Oooo if you love 50’s fashion and comedy – such a win!
I actually just wrote a review of a couple of days ago. I loved the show too. Rachel Brosnahan really was great and it’s always fun to see Monk. I got sad when I ran out of episodes to watch.
Fun!! I need to go check yours out.
you definitely peaked my interest!! totally going to check this out now!
Awesome! Let me know what you think!
Oooh, I definitely want to check this one out! My mom watched it and loved it also!
Strongly agree with your mom!
If you haven’t watched Amy Sherman-Palladino’s Bunheads, I think you’ll really enjoy that too (only one season which sucks but worth the binge). And if you like Sutton Foster in Bunheads, definitely watch Younger on Hulu (4 seasons and counting). And also Good Girls Revolt on Amazon (also only one season, but I have my fingers crossed it gets picked up again somewhere else) seriously just so good. All shows are women centered and AMAZING. Some great displays of female evolution and power.
This is amazing!!! Thank you so much for all the fantastic recommendations!
